[ARCHIVED] Statewide Warning on Korean Imported Shellfish Expanded to Include Canned Varieties

North Carolina State Health Director Laura Gerald’s warning to North Carolinians to avoid eating any fresh or frozen shellfish imported from South Korea has been expanded to included canned shellfish following an updated alert by the FDA.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) alert now states:

“FDA recommends that food distributors, retailers, and food service operators remove from sale or service, all fresh, frozen, and processed (including canned) Korean molluscan shellfish and any product subsequently made with them.”

The warning includes shucked or shell-on oysters, clams, mussels and roe-on or in-the-shell scallops from South Korea. Domestic shellfish processed by North Carolina-certified dealers is not affected by this warning. At present, the N.C. Division of Public Health has received no reports of illnesses associated with the Korean-produced shellfish products in North Carolina.
